During last week, I was able to do an abundance of thing in regard to the internet of things as well as the risks that play along with the Internet of Things. While on my mentor visit, John and I had talked about various different things, but one of the very interesting pieces that we had talked about was Network segmentation. What this is, is having multiple networks for different equipment. This could mean that there is a network for all of the convenience pieces, such as refrigerators for air conditioning units. And then there is a network for all of the super important items such as a computer or an iPhone. Another thing that we had talked about for real life hacks from iot. One of them being the Sands Casino in Las Vegas, having a fish tank connected to the internet for convenience, they ended up getting hacked by a foreign terrorist group because of this. To end the week off, I watched a video from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which gave me a very interesting piece to look at. An example of a futuristic risk that can be played is with bionic eyes. As there are scientific ways to cure blindness, bionic eyes or one that is being in production and can be a normal thing in the future, and what if they were to scan a QR code of ransomware on the person or the eyesight they have. This example is one of the things that I want to look into more, as well as how many different outlooks there are with the future. I know there has to be a ton, and I am excited to look into a lot more.
